Song "Look for the Silver Lining" (Kern/Sylva) Jazz Standard
Practice Journey
Version 12/05/23
Version 12/05/23
This version sounds fuller than the 11/13/23 version. The sound production is further back in the throat, while balancing out the 'mask' sound. This duality of dark and light plays out in jazz... similar to the classical Chiaroscuro dark-light tone coloring.
This version uses EQ settings sparkly, and small-reverb in PowerDirector software to thicken the original vocal.

Song "Alone Together" (Kern/Sylva) Jazz Standard
Practice Journey
Back to G flat minor
Back to the highest key (7/11/23)
One semitone lower than Eb. This has the least distortion.
To my surprise, now there is full resonance. Practice with half-way ventriloquist embouchure for more resonance. Notice that in this embouchure, lips are not moving much, so some consonants are not pronounced fully
Key D
Key D has best resonance
One semitone lower than Eb. This has the least distortion.
I will use this key for this song going forward.
Eb
Choosing a key is crucial
How this song typically place the vocal? all chest voice?
This recording is at speech level and vocal is placed in the mask. This is recorded on 11/28/23 after one full day singing in this new key, 3 semitones lower than Gb - still a 'crying like sound' in places, but not distortion. Note that lips are not yet moving in full motion to keep the same embouchure, to keep distortions out. I will demo the more seasoned recording in a week or two.
G flat minor
Practice at the highest key I can
Key Gb which may include mixed and chest voice
This recording (11/27/23) shows I have to go back and forth between chest and mixed voice to maintain resonance in key Gb, Although there is resonance, weaving in and out of chest/mixed voice will not meet the audience expectation. there are too many COMPING (cut and paste from several takes) to sound natural. This shows where my UPPER LIMITS are for this song. So it sounds weak and timid.... walking the resonance line. The timidness goes away when you go to the lower key.
7/11/23
Trying out this song at highest key with both chest and mixed voice
Testing the upper limits.
This recording shows the voice embouchure change often to handle different words and different register (mixed and chest voice). This vocal is louder than speech level. Louder than speech level is often required for singing resonance when the mouth is the main resonator.
